many as a single entity. The aetiology of the disease remains obscure. It has, however, been clearly established that thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is not responsible for the excessive thyroid activity. An abnormal thyroid stimulator (known as long-acting thyroid stimulator, or LATS), which is both chemically and immunologically distinct from TSH, is found in the serum of many patients with thyrotoxicosis, but its significance is not clear, since in some patients with severe hyperthyroidism LATS cannot be detected. On the present evidence LATS is probably of aetiological importance in some patients. Since LATS is a yG immunoglobulin and reacts with thyroid tissue it has been suggested that thyrotoxicosis, like other thyroid disturbances, may be an autoimmune disease. The role ofLATS in the pathogenesis of thyrotoxicosis has been discussed in two excellent

متن کاملThe Effect of Atenolol on Thyroid Hormons in Subclinical Hyperthyroidism
This Study was performed to evaluate the effect of atenolol on the serum concentration of TT4 and TT3 in subclinical hyperthyroid patients. Due to the i n s u fficient information about the effect of atenolol on serum level of these hormones, the aim of this research was to shade some light on the subject. Fifteen subclinical hyperthyroid patients entered this study. Each patient received ...
متن کاملMedical treatment of hyperthyroidism: state of the art.
Methimazole (MMI) and propylthiouracil (PTU) are the main antithyroid drugs used for hyperthyroidism. They inhibit the synthesis of thyroid hormone at various levels and are used as the primary treatment for hyperthyroidism or as a preparation before radioiodine therapy or thyroidectomy. MMI is the drug of choice because of its widespread availability, longer half-life and small number of sever...

So, many children are treated with radioiodine-131(RAI) ablation or surgical thyroidectomy as...
